Etsy Listing Image Sizes: The Complete Reference for 2026 editorial illustration
Original editorial illustration by SellerKite. Use the visual as a doorway into the research—not as a promise of results.

Etsy displays listing photos in a square (1:1) thumbnail grid on category pages, search results, and the homepage. If your listing photo is not square, Etsy crops it automatically from the center. Understanding the exact size requirements prevents cropped heads, cut-off designs, and blurry thumbnails that cost you clicks.

A useful lens. Treat this guide as a starting point for research. SellerKite editorial picks and rankings are opinions from our team, not independent guarantees of demand, rankings, or sales.

How Etsy thumbnail cropping works

When you upload a rectangular photo, Etsy automatically crops it to a 1:1 square centered on the image. This means the left and right edges (for landscape images) or the top and bottom (for portrait images) are cropped off. The safe zone for your key design elements is the center square of the image.

  • For a 2000 × 3000 px portrait image, only the central 2000 × 2000 px shows in the thumbnail
  • Keep product and text within the center 80% of the image for safety
  • You can manually adjust the thumbnail crop from Listing Manager → Edit thumbnail
  • The full uncropped image is visible on the listing detail page

Turn the idea into a testable offer

Choose one audience, one job, and one format. Build enough of the product that a buyer can understand, purchase, receive, and use it. Research is more useful when it changes a real listing decision.

Review what the market teaches you

Keep a small change log for images, copy, price, delivery, and customer questions. Use the record to improve one meaningful variable at a time instead of rebuilding the entire shop after one quiet result.

The buyer question behind the idea

Before you add another variation to this listing optimization workflow, ask what the buyer is trying to finish. The answer should be concrete enough to show in an image, explain in one sentence, and verify after delivery. If the product only sounds interesting to another seller, keep researching until the customer benefit is clearer.

This is also where differentiation becomes practical. You do not need to invent a new category; you need to make one decision easier, one moment calmer, or one result more achievable for a defined person. That focus should appear in the title, preview, price, instructions, and the support answer you would send on a busy day.

A small test before a large build

Make the smallest version that still feels complete. Give it a real name, a real preview, a real delivery path, and a real review step. Then ask someone unfamiliar with the project to describe what they think they will receive. Their answer is often more useful than another hour of internal polishing.

Keep the test measurable without pretending the result is a forecast. Record attention, questions, saves, conversion, support time, production time, and any mismatch between the promise and the delivered experience. Use the evidence to choose the next change instead of changing every part at once.

Before you publish

  • Can a first-time visitor name the product and intended buyer?
  • Does the first image show the real offer rather than only a mood?
  • Are dimensions, materials, file types, variants, or access steps clear?
  • Have you tested every link, export, personalization field, and sample?
  • Does the price include the work that happens after checkout?
  • Is the title specific without promising an outcome you cannot control?
  • Do you know which question or signal will guide the next revision?

Make the next decision clearer, then review the result with the same care you gave the idea.
